Kids these days get possessed to technology real quick. Some of them born as a tech savvy which is not bad.
To move your child slightly toward technology and to develop his mind, you have to give him something that he can nurture. This is where the 2nd Generation VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX comes into play!
Your child needs a little push in his brain and lots of play for mental growth. With this smartwatch, you can give him both!
Follow the review and I will show you how this watch (not just a watch, though) will teach, entertain and develop your kid.
Interface, Design and Colors
VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX has a touch screen interface suitable for 4-9 years old kids. However, it depends on how your child’s brain has developed. By a little help, your kid will figure out on his own how to operate it correctly.
The belt is soft, comfortable and flexible for all sizes of wrists. The look is childish and the color as well. If you kid is too matured, he might not become a fan of it. But generally, for young kids, nothing else can make them happier.
There are total 6 colors available. Royal Blue, Vivid Violet, Pink, Camouflage, Red Flame and Floral Swirl. Red Flame version has a Royal Blue Wristband and Floral Swirl has a Vivid Violet Wristband BONUS which others don’t!

Camera & Video
This smartwatch has a 0.3-megapixel camera on its top. It is capable of taking still images of 640X480 pixels resolution. Considering the price, quality of the camera is nice for playing purpose.
What I love about the camera is that it has many fun photo filters, frames and effects. Kids seem to like them very much and for what, this is an excellent choice for your young photographer!
The camera is on the top side of the watch where the belt is attached. Taking photos of thing in front of you is easy. But, you can’t take selfies while wearing it. You have to put it off first for taking selfies, which is a bit of disadvantage.
Kidizoom smartwatch has video recording option! It can record 320×240 pixels or 160×120 pixels videos. The maximum length of per video recording is 60 seconds.
The photos format is Standard Baseline JPEG and videos format is AVI (Motion JPEG).
Games & Activities
The 2nd Generation Kidizoom Smartwatch has a total of 5 built-in games, 3 fun activities, 3 action challenges with a smart motion sensor. That is not all, it has a download center named “VTech’s Learning Lodge“ where you will find more downloadable contents.
For your record, 5 built-in games are Jumping Egg, Music Town, Tic-Tac-Toe, Super Snowboard and Super Boarder. Those 3 activities are Monster Identity, Funny Face Detector and Sound Shaker. Lastly, 3 action challenges are Racing Run, Crazy Dance and Funky Jump.
What I can say about them is that your little kid aged between and around 4-9 will love them.
It does have a pedometer that can count steps or any movement. But you should know that it is actually for fun purpose and the company claims that it may not be accurate.
If you want to teach your child how to tell time correctly, this product is something you should want to consider. Why?
It has 50 built-in 3D clock faces which encourage kids to check time more often, and there is “Time Master” which teaches how to tell the time.
This VTech smartwatch does have Alarm, Stopwatch and time which are some excellent additions. These might help your kid learn how they work.
Storage & Sync
VTech Kidizoom DX has a total memory of 256 MB. It includes the program date so that the available memory will be less than that.
The company said that you could take approx. 1600 photos or 11 minutes of 320×240 pixels video or 23 minutes of 640X480 pixels video. Each video is limited to 1 minute. It is estimated, and it can vary depending on the environment.
You will get a Micro USB 2.0 cable to connect it to your computer. You can copy smartwatch data to your computer using this cable.
Are you worried your kid will play on it longer and hurt his eye? It should not be your concern because 2nd Generation Kidizoom DX comes with parental control.
You can limit how long your kid will play games. It can be set to 30, 60, 90 minutes or no limits per day.
In fact, if you want that your child should not play games on it during school hours, you got options. You can freeze games on the watch!
Battery & Charging
It works on a non-removable Li-ion Polymer battery. Regarding the battery life, the official says that it will last 2 weeks on low usage, 2-3 days on typical usage and 1 day on heavy usage.
However, don’t make too much expectation. It will totally depend on the usage and how long the screen is kept on.
Kidizoom DX doesn’t include any charger but a Micro USB 2.0 cable. You have to charge it by connecting it to a computer using the USB cable.
No GPS Unfortunately
Most parents want to keep an eye where his child is going especially the little one in the house.
But it is unfortunate that this feature doesn’t come along with the Kidizoom Smartwatch DX. You can not locate where your child is using it.
I don’t know why VTech hasn’t considered it yet. This single feature could have attracted thousands of good parents to buy this product.
What Other Things It Has
All the things I said is not enough. It has more to offer your kid:
- Voice Recorder
Editor’s Suggestion: Should You Buy VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX?
You have come to the most important question, as a parent should you buy it for your child?
If he/she is around the age of 4-9, this is the best thing you can gift him today!
Kidizoom DX is a smart toy over smartwatch. Your child’s brain will more develop in time using it. It has everything to be proved the best gadget and your kid will be dancing with joy having it on his wrist.
It does lack in a few fields. I wish this product had GPS and full waterproof built and it would have got a full 5-star rating from me.
Other than that, VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX is a good buy for kids and the best one in the market right now.
